Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Report on duty on time as per the scheduled shift and confirm assigned areas to the Unit in charge or Supervisor
  • Check all unit inventory and mark on the checklist, reporting any deficiencies, breakages, or non-functioning items to the Staff Nurse and Supervisor
  • Take shift handover from the incoming shift, covering patient details, files, medications, investigation reports, intake & output charts, and pending tasks with reasoning
  • Document the handover process in HMIS and report any significant concerns requiring urgent attention
  • Evaluate each patient's concerns and required supplies, medications, labs, and food, arranging them promptly
  • Provide direct patient care throughout the shift in a calm and considerate manner
  • Deliver quality care by adhering to IHHN policies and procedures, evaluating patient health outcomes against the provided care and medications
  • Resolve patient health problems by collaborating with the multidisciplinary team
  • Prepare medication requisitions, forward them to the pharmacy for dispensing, and follow up until dispensed, checking against the requisition upon receipt and administering according to safe drug administration rights
  • Maintain and ensure a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Protect patients, families, and employees by adhering to infection-control policies during medication administration and storage, including controlled substance regulations
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality throughout their hospital stay, especially during examinations, procedures, hygiene care, and transportation
  • Accompany physicians during rounds in the unit, noting orders given and requesting doctors to write orders in HMIS for any changes in patient care management, including medication
  • Assist doctors with any procedures in the procedure room, preparing the patient physically and emotionally, and ensuring the availability of all necessary equipment
  • Ensure that unit medical/surgical supplies are sufficient, properly stored, and readily available
  • Follow doctor's pre-op orders, ensuring consent is signed, NPO status is maintained, site preparation is done, pre-op bath is given, OR dress is changed, blood is arranged, I/O is maintained, pre-op medication is administered, and fresh vital signs are checked and recorded, transferring walking patients on a wheelchair
  • Report incidents/issues related to patients, staff, visitors, or equipment loss/breakage/dysfunction in a timely manner in collaboration with seniors
  • Follow post-op orders, noting the last vital signs reading from OR, checking the surgery site dressing for bleeding or cyanosis, monitoring I/V sites and surgical drains, maintaining I/O, and being watchful for changes in vital signs or bleeding at the surgery site
